Psychology is both a science and a profession. Psychologists in Ontario hold doctoral degrees from recognized University programs. Psychological Associates may hold either a doctoral or a master's degree in psychology.
In addition, they are regulated by their licensing body, The College of Psychologists of Ontario.
Professional training in Psychology typically includes the scientific study of biological, learning and social bases of human emotion, thought and behaviour. Psychologists and psychological associates are generally trained in research, assessment and diagnosis, as well as intervention and treatment techniques. These include procedures for remedying personal, inter-personal and group problems.
Within psychology there are several informal areas of specialization; e.g., clinical psychology, neuropsychology, forensic psychology, geriatric psychology and industrial/organizational psychology, school psychology, rehabilitation psychology and child psychology.
In Ontario, only registered psychologists can legitimately call themselves "psychologist", while psychologists and psychological associates can use the terms "psychology" or "psychological" to describe their services.
